Beautiful Interruption + #MyPostMonday Curating The Week's Best Original Content

Today my husband and I took the longest hike I've taken this summer! I hiked 9 miles total and I wasn't initially completely on board with it. But knowing how excited he is when I go with him and seeing the effort he went to in order to make sure that I would definitely be with him this morning as he carefully woke me up at 5 am, was something I couldn't turn down. (He even made me breakfast!)

We got to the trailhead at around 7 a.m. and due to it being MONDAY, no one was around. The destination was Lake Desolation. It doesn't sound too inviting, does it? Right now I'm suffering from a few maladies, all on my left side. The one that was bothering me today was my left achilles tendon. It has been injured in the past and has visible scar tissue built up. I've been doing some H.I.I.T. lately and my achilles doesn't like it.

So we started out, with me baby-ing my poor achilles and not really sure what to expect, since I'd never been to Desolation Lake before. I was surprised that this was one of the prettiest and well kept trails I've been on. Sure, there were a few steep parts, but nothing I couldn't get up using some care and caution.

We walked virtually the entire 4.5 miles to the lake without seeing a soul, until right at the end. There were 5 hikers that came up behind us and caught up to us right as we got to the lake. If you have been to the lakes in either Little or Big Cottonwood Canyons, this lake is a 5 on a scale of 1 to 10. But a 5 is gorgeous in comparison to most lakes. It's just that the alpine lakes here in the canyons are so beautiful and pristine and so spectacularly gorgeous.

Seeing this lake for the first time, I could see that the extremely dry winter had taken its toll and the water level was way down. But "desolation" is not a word I would use to describe this lake. It was still absolutely beautiful!

In another effort to keep our hikes fun for both of us, my husband got us a set of two-way radios to keep us connected, even if he wanted to hike up even further and summit a peak, which is not something I will be doing any time soon. He left me at the lake and we communicated through the radios for the rest of the time.
Desolation Lake
This turned out to be one of the most enjoyable hikes I've had yet. There were a variety of reasons that made it so fun, but how tragic if I had rolled over and said that I didn't want to go this morning! I could have used any number of reasons to NOT go--my achilles was bothering me, I have so much to do before school starts up again, I've already been on the minimum number of hikes I said I would do this summer, I have goals that need to be met, etc. etc.

But I know that interruptions happen, and this interruption happened to be a beautiful one. I learned that goals can still be met, even though they might happen in a different order than you originally planned!

Of Most Importance + #MyPostMonday Curating The Week's Best Original Content

I love feeling healthy and energetic! I do a few things daily to make sure I stay feeling that way. It's something I conscientiously work towards on a daily basis.

Another thing I hold dear and work hard to keep is my relationship with my kids. They are gone and on their own--definitely not mama's boys. So sometimes it's up to me to keep the communication going and the home fires burning. I work on that as well because it's really important to me.

And of course, marriage is definitely something one needs to keep working on, unless you plan on letting it dwindle into a series of auto-pilot conversations and mundane schedules. Apparently my husband thinks it's important too, because he takes part in the maintenance of our relationship too, especially when food is involved! We've been married for 18 years now! It seems like just yesterday that we decided to not delay things and to just go for it, 4 months after we met.

Image - Gina Herbert
The above are some of the more obvious things that a lot of people might agree are important and worth fighting to keep. But there are some less obvious things that I find are just as important to keep.

One of them is something I have taken for granted all my life but am now starting to wonder if I really should have...the freedom of religion.

A religious person shares a common belief that there is "a right and wrong in human behavior that has been established by a Supreme Being." (Dallin H. Oaks) That person may be a member of any given number of religions, but that one belief, at least, is held in common.

Religion is good for society because it has been found that, in general, religious individuals have better family lives, stronger marriages, less substance abuse and crime, higher educational levels, a greater willingness to volunteer and donate to charities, better work habits, longer lives, better health, greater income, and higher levels of well-being and happiness. These are all things that, as a whole, will benefit society! *See Sources below

Unfortunately, protections afforded to freedom of religion and belief are often weak, unheeded, and attacked. Powerful pressures attempt to restrain religious freedom, even in countries that historically protected it most vigorously. These pressures seem to be gaining ground in many countries.
*See Sources below

I am saddened when I see the historical tradition of public prayer, giving public credence to God, historical edifices referencing divinity, and individuals wanting to publicly display their heartfelt belief in God attacked and belittled.

When someone is censored when moved to say what they truly believe, how can they claim freedom of speech? And the same with freedom of press and freedom of assembly. When they can't write what they believe or assemble to speak about what they believe, how can the claim of "freedom" be made?

Amazingly, in 2013, approximately 5.5 billion people--77 percent of the world's population--lived in countries with high or very high restrictions on religious liberty, up from 68 percent just six years earlier. *See Sources Below

"Sadly, religion is often countercultural and thus unpopular. For this reason, religious freedom, even where it is generally supported in principle, is often vigorously opposed in practice." (D. Todd Christofferson)

What We Can Do

This is a freedom I have decided is too valuable to lose and I would like to do more to help protect this inalienable right here in my own country. If you are also of a mind to protect religious freedom, here are some things we can do to fight for that cause:

1) When we hear of someone being unfairly treated because of demonstrating or vocalizing their religious beliefs, find out the source and write a letter in support of the person who was treated unfairly.

2) Openly state our support of religious freedom and religion in general.

3) Don't openly criticize others of their differing religious beliefs . They have the same right as we do to practice their beliefs. We need to unite rather than be divided in this important freedom.

4) Don't be critical of those who profess no religious beliefs. No one should be compelled to be religious.

5) Write to our elected officials and make it known that we are supportive of religious freedom.

If more of us speak out and stand up for what was granted us when the U.S. was founded, we can preserve that important freedom. It is important and worth fighting for to keep!

7 Good Reasons To Consider Getting A Wig

Today is Halloween and I'm convinced that the easiest way to make a great costume is with a crazy wig! I realized that today when our middle school principal did it! She basically bought a hot pink wig and wore it. No other costume accessories! I literally didn't recognize her, though, when I saw her!

I like the idea more and more, because sometimes when focusing on everything else, I don't have time to do that thoughtful, original costume, like I thought I originally would. Next year, I'd like to have a wig ready to plop on, just in case my costume plans go awry.

But in reality, wigs have come a long way and are actually something to consider if you have the following hair care dilemmas.

The Boyfriend Watch from Speidel + 15% #DiscountCode!

Classic watches will never go out of style! Yes, I know there are the Fitbits and the Apple Watches that do everything from preheating your oven to starting your car! And you can even make them look almost decent, when you do matchy matchy with the bands!
But there is something about a classically designed watch that is timeless. It can add to your accessories like nothing else can. It's amazing what a watch can do to help accessorize your wardrobe and make you feel awesome! Owning and wearing my new watch made me think about what style is and I came up with my own personal philosophy about it! Style is finding both comfort and a sense of fun simultaneously. Style makes your life better! But you shouldn't be a slave to it!
(This post was facilitated by Speidel Watches and I was provided product for review purposes! All opinions are my own!)

One of the heavy hitters in the history of U.S. timepieces is Speidel (pronounced Spy-Dell). Founded in 1904 in Rhode Island by German businessman, Frederick Speidel, the company helped to blaze the trail for the American watch industry that flourishes today. That's 124 years! There aren't too many U.S. companies that are that old. It speaks to the staying-power, adaptivity, and business sense that this company has had and continues to have! They practically invented the watchband, and then introduced the interchangeable band later on. Remember the scissor action bands that conformed to your wrist size without having to get it sized? Yep. Speidel.  And of course, the still popular Twist-O-Flex band was introduced back in 1959.
Speidel makes watches and bands for every demographic--from children, to teens and adults! The prices are not outrageously expensive either. If you want a sensible yet attractive, no-nonsense timepiece, you can choose from several from as low as $39.95! Children's watches are a very reasonable $19.95! What a great Easter Gift for a child! Their first watch!

One of their truly charming and exciting pieces is the new 'Boyfriend' Watch.

It comes in 7 different styles. I chose the Silver-Toned Style. It comes with two interchangeable bands--the non-expandable silver band and a stylish blue plaid band. I love the fun playful numbers, with the stone encrusted face! It is water resistant and comes with a 2-year warranty. I love wearing a piece of history on my wrist, but yet feel like it is relevant to today's woman. I am definitely a 21st century gal, and don't like to be wearing ancient feeling pieces. This is not your grandmother's watch for sure!

You can easily find a dealer in your area because Speidel dealers are literally everywhere! Or you can order online! Right now you can receive a 15% sitewide discount when you use the code GALNEEDS15 at checkout! Valid thru April 12th! At any rate, you should definitely do some serious investigation into a truly special piece of Americana!

Follow me on Instagram, where I will be styling the blue plaid watchband which is also included in 'The Boyfriend' Watch package!

You can also follow Speidel on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram!

An Alpaca Wool Blend Sweater From Peru

One of my favorite gifts this holiday season was the package I received from Novica! I had chosen an off-white alpaca blend tunic. It would be perfect for the cold weather we always experience in December here in Utah! But would it arrive in time? I was a bit late ordering--on December 15th the order was finally placed. I decided I didn't want to risk it not arriving in time for Christmas so I paid a little extra for High Priority Mail, guaranteed to get to me before Christmas. It did, in fact, get to me very quickly. I received the package 4 days later, on December 19th. And what a beautiful package it was! The little Peruvian Lady on the bow was adorable!
Novica is a--if not the--premier fair trade company, meaning they enable artisans from all over the world to bring their crafts to us for fair prices. While doing that, Novica simultaneously enables international artisans to make a fair wage in order support their families and continue producing high quality art.  There are hundreds of individual artisans to choose from, thousands of items ready to be shipped to you, multiple countries represented, and categories aplenty. It just makes me feel good to know that I can, through my purchase, help someone in another country who needs my financial support to survive!  I, in turn, need the product that he/she produces! No one will be getting rich from my contribution, but authentic and true art will be living in my home, and on my person for a very long time to come!

As I was perusing the website, looking in particular for a nice wool or alpaca-blend poncho, the work of artisan Alfredo Falcon, from Peru caught my eye. He seems to have a gift for capturing western style yet retaining a distinctive Peruvian flair. I loved his other creations as well--capes, cloaks, hats, gloves, men's fashion, and more! With over 140 reviews of his work, one can see just how talented he is. Born in Lima, he learned the traditional weaving techniques from his parents, as did his parents before him, learning from their parents--a family entirely devoted to the art of textiles. But hard times made him flee Lima to the district of Huaycan, where many fled from terrorist attacks. Before working with Novica, his market was limited to a few small local shops and a single foreign client who purchased work from him from time to time. Since joining Novica, his popularity has increased dramatically and he has many clients that he works with. He states, however, that Novica will always be his "preferred customer."

Enjoying Holiday Celebrations with my Alpaca Wool Blend Sweater!

Although the weave is loose, it is still very warm and toasty!

When I saw the 'Charisma' Alpaca Wool Blend Pullover Sweater, I knew I wanted it! Over 45% alpaca, and 15% wool, it is so light and yet toasty warm! I wore it during the holiday celebrations and was very happy with it. The best part is that I will also be wearing it for the rest of the winter to work, and for casual dates as well! It works well for me and my lifestyle. In the meantime, I added several more items to my wishlist at Novica, including the "Illusions Of Blue' Poncho/Shawl!

I looked through their site --I'm a fairly modest person, not wanting to show vast amounts of skin--and found the following pieces at great prices! I would probably wear tights or leggings with the first dress and a flowing shirt over or T-shirt under the other dresses. So there really is something for everyone! I'd encourage you to take a look and find a few things for yourself!  You're gonna love it!

My friend, Lei, is modeling some active wear that she ordered on AMIClubWear.com. You must know that they seem to be phasing out their active wear line. She had some trouble finding things that weren't out of stock. They do have a huge inventory of dresses, shoes, swimwear, intimates, and costumes, though! Doesn't she look great? Some Of My Met Gala Favorites

The Met Gala was on Monday and if you love fashion, this was the place to be! At $25,000 a ticket, one has the right to dress and express themselves in pretty much  any way they choose. This year's theme was "China: Through The Looking Glass".  I chose a few of my favorites!

Beyonce - Again and again she pushes the envelope, this time in a gold sequined, chiffon number that leaves little to the imagination. If you got it, flaunt it?

Anne Hathaway - I do love her as an actress. She gives every role she has her all. This gold lame, chain mail number makes her rail thin body look like it almost has curves! Her face is so beautiful that she can do anything with it.

Jennifer Lawrence - As far removed from Katniss as she could be in this faux two-piece body conscious dress. Look at the necklace she is wearing!  I'm still trying to decide if I like it with the outfit or not!

Helen Mirren - What a classy look. How old is she? She is a UK National Treasure. She looks stunning. The earrings accent her outfit so well, along with the clutch!

Sarah Jessica Parker - Who could pull anything like this off? I actually like it! She looks like an evil witch queen from a 'Game Of Thrones' novel. But if you're going for that look, she pulled it off magnificently!

Selena Gomez - Not sure I understand what she is trying to pull off. Maybe she's going for the naughty nun look! What makes it turn from elegant to slightly ridiculous is the head piece.

Katie Holmes - Tom Cruise's ex is looking mighty coy these days! The front of her gown is very demure and then she turns around and it's very daring! It makes for a bit of a surprise. Well-played!

Kate Hudson - Kate was accompanied by the designer who designed her dress - Michael Kors. The dress is very detailed in its stitched design. The train is just right and the front is well-proportioned and flattering. I'm not sure what it looks like in the back, but the front is gorgeous.

Which outfit is your favorite? Which is your least favorite?

A Statement T-Shirt from Small Home Design!

Sometimes I just want to make a statement!  But I'm not an in your face type of gal.  In fact, I'm rather reticent, not unlike one of my favorite authors, Jane Austen.  Lindsay, at Small Home Design on Etsy captured it amazingly well in this t-shirt she designed and which caught my eye.   I love the statement our friend Jane made so well in Pride and Prejudice...."I do not want people to be agreeable, as it saves me the trouble of liking them."  So aptly put, and so passively aggressively beautiful!
Then on top of that, put it in neon pink to fluff it up even more.

I love it. But is it too much?
Okay, I thought about it and it's obvious, sometimes you just need to say it!!!!

Do you have a statement that you need to lay out to the world in a beautifully designed t-shirt, towel, or bag?  You need to check out Small Home Design!  Anything from your favorite recipe to a poem that speaks to you--Lindsay will put it onto something that will speak to the world for you!  Or check out her own designs.  She's got several great Jane Austen quotes and some from 'Mean Girls' and many other great pieces in her inventory.

What I Wore...#RealMomStyle!

I'm linking up again to these lovely mom bloggers in this event!
I added a few shoes to my collection this week.  I actually took advantage of all the boot sales going on right now.  I got two pairs of really cute boots at 'Forever Young', for half price, so super good deal.  I know that I won't be getting much wear out of them this year because the season is almost over, but they are classic styling, so I'm set for next year.   I bought another pair of shoes at a Dillard's Clearance Sale with an additional 20% off for $19.99.  I really like them a lot.  Also, if you go here, you can get 2 pairs of Sunset Sandals for only $10.00.

This week I attended my son's SteelFist Fight Night.  He does MMA "on the side" and he is pretty dedicated.  He lost 25 lbs from his normal 195 lb. frame to fight at a lower weight.  He fought a guy who has quite a few wins under his belt, usually winning with knock-outs.  But I'm happy to report that Ed 'The Terminator' Whitmore won in all 3 rounds by unanimous decision.  Anyway, I wore the outfit I'm showing to that event.  I was probably the most covered-up female in the room, which I don't mind at all!  It was chilly that evening, pouring rain!
Normal - 195 lbs.

At weigh-in:  170 lbs.

Cariloha Bamboo Clothing (A Review & $70 #Giveaway)

Cariloha_BambooBamboo grows in warm regions. I want to be in a warm region right now. But I'm not. I will settle for writing about Bamboo that grows in a warm region. One can only dream that someday it will also be warm here!
The Carribean is warm and a place where wearing bamboo clothing would make a lot of sense. Thus, the first part of the name.  Can you guess where another warm region might be that would make up the second part of the name Cariloha? (I'll let you stew on that one) Did you know that when wearing bamboo clothing, your body temperature is 3 degrees cooler on average?  I learned something!  Also when I think of bamboo, I think of these hard yet pliable plants sticking up out of the water.  I didn't really translate that into being soft when it comes to clothing, bedding and linens but let me tell you, clothing made out of bamboo is extremely soft!  The same is said when it comes to bath towels, and sheets!  Wow, it is really something.  Bamboo sheets don't have a thread count per se, but they are softer and more durable than  4 or 5 hundred thread count sheets.  I was able to walk through the Headquarters at Cariloha in Sandy, UT and I got to physically feel the sheets, towels and clothing.  Everything was unbelievably soft.  Some of the pants, like Cargo Shorts, which are supposed to feel rather stiff and sturdy weren't as soft, but comparatively speaking, even those were soft.  So are you getting the message I am trying to convey here?  If you value softness in your stuff, Bamboo is the way to go!!!  If you value coolness in the summer heat, bamboo is the way to go.  If you are concerned about wearing the most eco-friendly material on the planet, bamboo is the way to go. It is the most renewable and sustainable plant in the world!

Another characteristic about Bamboo Clothing is that it is able to keep you from being stinky from sweat. Not that I ever sweat...or smell...ever.  But for those that do occasionally have that worry, the material is extremely breathable and also has some sort of anti-bacterial property that prevents sweating and odors. Who knew?

I was able to take home a couple of items!  They were the the Bamboo Skirt in Chocolate and one of their t-shirts in white.  I absolutely love these items.  The skirt is definitely for summer-strolling on the beach or out in the backyard with flip flops--something that I am patiently waiting for.  In the meantime, I will wear tights underneath, many tops and a jacket and a scarf and it will do nicely for winter garb.
Sorry little fuzzy, but you get the idea!
The t-shirt is so soft, and cuddly.  I actually collect white t-shirts and this one is definitely my favorite because of the softness!  Even the bag they came in is made from bamboo!
If you are ever in a popular vacation spot, be sure to look for Cariloha because they are all over the map.  For instance, they are found in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Aruba, Barbados, Grand Caymen, Kauai, Hawaii; Key West, Las Vegas, San Diego, Ocho Rios, Jamaica; Juneau, Alaska and more!  If you are dreaming about going to one of these places but aren't there quite yet, you can always order online!
I'm not done with Cariloha by any means.  No, this is just the beginning of my love affair with them.  I need to get some towels and linens because I want to have that luxury!  Oh, they have a sister company called Del Sol.  Ever heard about it?  It is every bit as unique and fun as Cariloha! Watch for more about this company later on as we are even closer to warm weather!

Enter the Rafflecopter Giveaway below for your chance to win an item(s) of choice from Cariloha, up to $70!

Ugglebo Clogs {Review and #Giveaway $180 ARV}

I found the greatest clog company. If you want authentic Swedish Clogs that are cute, stylish and well-made, you want to check out Ugglebo Clogs.  I ordered these cute Etna clogs and I love them!  I had a couple of outfits that needed the right shoe and when I saw these, I knew I'd found them.
I've always loved clogs and have owned at least 5 pairs at different times in my life. Some have been more well-made than others. The last pair that I owned fell apart. The sole came unglued from the heel. But these are so well-made that I won't have that problem. They are also comfortable.  It goes to show that wooden shoes are very comfortable if they are well-made!  Ugglebo crafts their footwear using the finest leathers, wooden bases, and metal hardware available throughout the world.
When the shoes arrived, they were not in a shoe-box.  They were neatly wrapped in butcher paper and I thought it was wonderful because it saves the trees when you don't use a whole shoebox.
The color wasn't the exact red that I saw on the website.  In fact, I would call it more maroon or burgundy.  But I love them!
I love the selection they have.  They have high-heeled clogs, mid-heels and low heels.  And they have the most amazing boots.
You can buy Ugglebo Clogs in a variety of locations around the world or directly from their website!  The average price is $179.00, but several styles, including my Etnas, are on sale right now for $116.35!  And if you buy two pairs, it's free shipping!
Or you can win a pair right here!  Just fill in the entry form below and see how the draw falls!  Good luck!  You're going to love your Ugglebos!  This giveaway is open to U.S. entrants 18 and over!
