Was This 3rd Grade Teacher Going Overboard?

Last month was Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.  In an attempt to illustrate what it was like for the slaves to ride in a ship, below deck, without moving for days or even months, a teacher made her 3rd graders lay down on a rug and not move for 45 minutes.  Now, for me, I'd love it.  I'd pass out and not wake up for awhile and totally come out of the teaching experience thinking that while it must have totally sucked to have had to travel worse than steerage class, and against my will at that, I definitely needed the rest.  But for a classroom full of 3rd graders, that might be a little bit of a  hard lesson.  A real concept of time and a sense of empathy for others based on their own experiences are things that we don't really expect them to fully grasp at this time in their short lives
I think that possibly a 15 minutes stretch would have been ample time to show them how hard it must have been to lay like that on a ship coming to America.
Evidently, though, a parent feels so strongly that this was a misuse of a teacher's authority that she has filed a complaint with the Canyons School District's office of civil rights.  The mother, a legal emigrant from an Eastern European country several years ago said this kind of teaching tactic hits too close to home.  She grew up in a school system ruled by the old Soviet Union, which "introduced a destructive educational system: teachers enjoying corporal punishments, verbal abuse and humiliation, voiceless students and helpless parents."
I believe that the above is a true statement, based on my acquaintance with my friend, Viktoriya, who grew up in the Ukraine and told me tales of the teachers there, who were very cruel and humiliating to students.
I do not believe, however, that this teacher was acting irresponsibly or cruelly.  Perhaps, uninformed and overly dramatic would be better descriptions.  I don't believe there is any looming danger of our school systems becoming encumbered with teachers who are empowered with weapons of corporal discipline and lack of guidelines.  Not a chance. I think this teacher was a young and zealous teacher, with strong beliefs about this historical event in America.  I say no harm, no foul!

My Milestone!

It has been a year since I opened up the first giveaway on my blog--It was just because I thought it would be so fun to give things away to readers who came across here!  So I decided to do something for Valentine's Day!  It was a gift set of great Cinnamon Lotion and Massage Oil.  Of course it was provided by moi, yours truly, me, myself and I!  But I had a great time and was really excited that I had 76 entrants!  The year went by and I just realized that I have had 36 winners since then!  I'm so excited about that.  Any little thing that I can do to spread the love about products that I think are incredible and provide some free ones is all my pleasure!
Thank you so much to the incredible sponsors I have had the chance to work with.  Sponsors like, Pink Bench, Tropical Traditions, CSN, Breeze Comfort, Misikko, NGlassworks, Grateful Body and many others.
Of course, I'd like this coming year to be just as great as last year. So please keep stopping by and checking out my giveaways and reviews. I fully intend to keep them coming!
Of course I love to enter your giveaways as well.  If you want to see the giveaways that I list and enter, please go to my site called, A Gal Needs At Least 2 Blogs!  Please feel free to follow along! I only list the giveaways that I absolutely love!  You might agree!

Alpine Weight Loss Secrets {Giveaway!}

Congratulations to #2!  You will be e-mailed and have 48 hours to respond to claim this prize!  Thanks so much to Stefan Aschan for the opportunity to host this great giveaway!

I've never been one to diet because it really messes with my phyche.  I was actually a bulimic adolescent for a short period of time and was also anorexic before that.  The pressures of society were so great that I succumbed to the need and desire to be ultra thin. Now, I absolutely adore food and if I am blessed with an occasion to enjoy a tasty morsel, such as the incredible tacos made with corn tortillas, homemade guacamole, chicken and salsa that DH made, I'm not going to pass up on it.  But fortunately for me, tasty also means healthy.  I don't like junk food with empty calories and artificial ingredients too much because I feel gross afterwards.

When I got the opportunity to read Alpine Weight Loss Secrets, I was really impressed. I can put so many of the ideas found in this book into my life without actually feeling like I am dieting.  The great thing is that I will still lose weight if I follow any number of the tips found in Alpine Weight Loss Secrets!
The chapters in the book are:
  • Change your mind, change your body (flex your mental muscle)
  • “Lighten” your metabolism
  • Alpine Eating: Choose Tomatoes Not Potatoes
  • Improve Your Fat-titude
  • Instant Anti-Ager: Your Posture
  • The At-Home Alpine Aerobic Solution
  • Train Yourself “Jung” (young)
  • A Flat Belly – “Schnell” (fast)!
  • The Joy of Living: Think and Grow Thin
  • “Hudry Wusch”: Eat Yourself Thin
  • “Holodrio!” Stay, Feel, and Look Young for a Lifetime
I feel like this book is great for any age or stage in life because it is a philosophy that works with you and your lifestyle.  The recipes are totally healthy, easy and tasty.  The only thing is that some of us may not have access all of the time to organic meats and vegetables, like Stephan recommends.  Of course organic is better, just not always accessible.  I say, do the best that you can at where you are, it will still be great.
My take:  This isn't just another diet book.  It is a fresh and very motivating approach to food and exercise that makes losing weight fun and not drudgery! My suggestion would be to work on one chapter at a time until it is part of your lifestyle and you don't have to think about it anymore.  A simple change that I have made is that I have lemon water in the morning.  It is really simple, but it makes a world of difference because it speeds up the digestive system and metabolic processes!
Stephen would like to give one of my readers a free copy of this book and here is all you need to do to qualify!

Tell me how your weight loss experience has been in the past and a weight loss tip that has worked for you!

Attention Utah!

Are you looking for something creative and fun to do Friday night? I  work with an amazing gal, Cassi Palmer, who is spearheading a super benefit music and comedy concert featuring Jason Hewlett and some great local musicians!  Her cousin, Dan Sloan, discovered he had a huge brain tumor during an eye exam.
He has had it partially removed but doctors couldn't get it all because it was too close to vital brain tissues. The remaining portion was rated a stage 3 tumor, 1 being the least serious and 4 being the most dangerous.  He is seasonally employed and has minimal insurance.  This is a great way to help a wonderful person while enjoying a great night out.  Please join us!  There will be a bake sale and silent auction at 6 pm, before the concert, which starts at 7 pm.
It will be held at The Waterford School, 1480 E. 9400 S. Sandy, UT  84093
To buy tickets online or find out more, visit dansloanconcert.com. Tickets are $15 for one person or $35 for a pack of four. Tickets can also be purchased at the door on the evening of the 4th.
And for those who wish to donate in lieu of or in addition to attending the concert, there is a paypal account set up for taking donations electronically (there is a charitable account set up at America First Credit Union in Dan’s behalf). It’s difficult to express how much your generosity is appreciated.
 Thanks so much!

Gina Parker PR - NOT!

How many of you have heard the name Gina Parker, PR?  I had been hearing about it and had almost participated in one of her events, but didn't.  But then I heard about this $1000 giveaway for one lucky winner! Participants were giving $5, $10 and $20 to list their individual sites like Twitter, Facebook, etc. Those who entered the giveaway were asked to follow any or all sites on the list and also tweet about the giveaway. Well, this was all a ruse and anyone who paid Gina Parker was duped.  There is now no giveaway link, no linky for entrants to continue entering, no $1000 to be given away and no site.   All have disappeared.  Hey, I guess I was a sucker too.  I was actually going to post about my experience and the difference between taking part in Blogtastic with Jessica at My Silly Monkeys and this one a week ago.  Well, since there is no Gina Parker event now, I just need to say that the difference is that Blogtastic was legit and Gina Parker's Social Media & Small Biz Hop was a scam!

Blogtastic was so much fun! We got the chance to meet a lot of great bloggers, hook up with some great sponsors, get a few more fabulous followers and it was totally free!  The only thing we needed to do was come up with our own sponsors or our own prize pack, worth $50.  With Gina Parker's crazy "Social Media and Small Business Hop" you had to pay for the chance to participate with the hopes of winning the big prize and maybe get a few followers from it.
I was also harrassed to be in Blogmania, initially run by Ms. Parker, and I frankly just didn't have the time.  I'm so glad I didn't do it, or pay any money.

I got a sick, sinking feeling in my gut when I couldn't find the contest website anymore. She hung around long enough to get fairly well known around the blogosphere and then made her pathetic move. I, for one, will be very skeptical about any event that requires payment to participate. No doubt "Gina Parker" will attempt to morph into yet another another "Mom Blogger" and try to scam everyone again. She definitely should be prosecuted and severely punished so that she and others like her will think twice before trying this again. Our faith and goodwill have been terribly eroded because of one bad apple. So sad...

I now have a firm new philosophy, thanks to Gina Parker PR.  That is, I will not pay money for gaining followers.  How stupid, in the first place.  Am I so insecure about my blogging abilities that I have to resort to that?  Time to take a break and evaluate why I am blogging.  I shouldn't be in a competition with anyone to get more followers, anyway!  And I typically am not, but it just makes me mad that I was so naiive to just plunk down $30 (yes, 30 friggin dollars) to someone I only vaguely know of in print.  I think I was coming off the high of Blogtastic that I wanted it to continue!  It's almost as if the fact that "Gina Parker" could express herself on the cyberspace web page and that made it OK to trust her pitches and just throw over $30 to her.  I should have given it away to my readers already here!  Sheesh!  I could have put up another great cash giveaway for that!  Let that be a lesson to me.  I already have 830 or so fabulous followers.  What, isn't that enough?  I can't even keep track of most of you. Why in the world would I want to pay for more?
I already have more wonderful giveaways than I can keep up with.  My sponsors have been fabulous, my readers have been patient and haven't desserted me because I don't post every single day or just have one or two giveaways up right now (albeit some really good ones).  Excuse me, you know I'm busy like you are!

Anyway, I think I'll just chalk this one up as another lesson learned in the world of blogging, and hopefully some of you will learn from my mistake(s) and avoid a pitfall.  Frankly, I hope Gina Parker, PR enjoys her money, has a good time spending it and then gets it all back in bad karma!

CSN $75 Giveaway!

Congratulations to #504, Abbey, who said--dt
http://twitter.com/#!/uberabby2/status/36891860479778816  Thank you all very much for entering and please enter my book giveaway - Alpine Weight Loss Secrets!

Here it is!  My highly anticipated (at least by me!) CSN $75 Gift Code Giveaway. I hope that you know who CSN is by now.  If not, let me enlighten you.  CSN has 200+ stores, they have free shipping on a whole bunch of their items, great customer service, and better selection than many specialty stores have for items you are looking for.  Just type in the general term in the search area, and voila!  You will get 100's of results in most cases.  You can narrow it down or target specific items or brands after that.  One of my all-time favorite areas at CSN is the cookware.com sight!  It makes one giddy to see how many casserole dishes they have, for instance!

So enjoy looking around the CSN website and salivate at all the many wonderful things you can get at great prices and some even with no shipping!  And since I mentioned searching for the item you want, let's explore how to do that.  Let's pretend that you want to search for a pie pan...and while you're at it, you can enter to win a $75 CSN Gift Code!
First and Mandatory Entry:  Follow me on Google Friend Connect and visit Pie Pans on CSN. Go to Narrow Your Results on the left sidebar and find something you want based on a search from that.  What search did you do and what item did you choose?

We Love Colors Giveaway!

The two winners of this giveaway are:  #95 and #76!  Congratulations, you have also been notified by e-mail!

We Love Colors is tights in 51 great colors!  It is also knee highs, thigh highs, knee socks, leggings, dancewear, men's dancewear and tights, kid's tights, fishnets, splash tights, and more!  I like We Love Colors because of their easy order system, and quick delivery.  They cater to any and all sizes!

I find these tights to be really soft, comfy, and durable. They come in a wide range of sizes and when I first put them on I was worried they could be too big. But they didn't roll down or sag like some tights do. They would be great for those on the taller side. But, I'm 5'5 and they are perfect for me. I can really see them getting a lot of wear in this chilly Utah weather!

To find your perfect tight size, first pick which kind of tights you want here.  Next look at the sizing options for this item.  Some items are one size fits all and others are broken down into sizes.  Also check for availability.  Right now, apparently, the demand for leggings is extremely high and some of the leggings options are currently out of stock.  But still there are lots of options even in the leggings department.
I made a really fun discovery when I happened upon the We Love Colors Style Blog!  If you want inspiration on how to wear your tights, this would be it!  Check it out!
I highly recommend We Love Colors and suggest that you try some!
2 readers will win a pair of nylon/lycra tights from We Love Colors by entering below:

This Much Fun and More To Come!

Thanks for everyone's patience until I got back from work to make the big announcements.  I tell you, maybe I ought to go to numbered comments.  I had to count through twice for each winner, just to make sure that I was on count.  I picked one winner from my main entry page and one winner from my extra entry page.  The only catch being that on the extra entry page, they needed to have also entered on the main entry page.  And on the main entry page, they only should have entered one comment on that page and that was which package they preferred.  Both of my winners did so great!  They entered correctly, which said to me that it really wasn't rocket science to enter correctly!  One just needed to read the directions.  So, here are the winners!   Prize package #1, Sporty You, goes to: #129 on my main entry page.

Prize package #2, Feminine You, goes to: #104 on my extra entry page.

I Love, You Love, We Love Colors! {Review}

One of the reasons I like winter is because it is the greatest time to wear tights!  They are fun and add pizazz  to a wardrobe, not to mention warmth!  Depending on the quality and fit, they are very comfortable too.  We Love Colors, inc. is a family run business that makes tights, and when I say tights, I mean tights of every color and style. I actually have been admiring this particular company from afar for quite awhile!  Founded in 2003, We Love Colors specializes in selling tights, leggings, dancewear, fishnets, socks, and they do it for men, women and children of all ages and sizes!

We Love Colors has so many color and style options and leaves the door open for so much creativity.  I am amazed at all the wonderful combinations that can be made with a simple pair of tights!  Here are some of my favorites!
I was a wussy and ordered the light gray nylon/lycra tights instead of a more crazy bold pattern.  They are so comfortable and made me crave more!  So I ordered the gray tights and love them! Next time I’m going nuts and will order some thigh highs!
We Love Colors comes in the largest selection of 51 different colors, 13 splash colors, Zebra prints, checker tights and stripped tights.  I love the soft feel of the material.  It is definitely the softest pair of tights I've ever owned.  Then my interest is piqued when I look at the Croche Fishnet tights!  Super cute pattern!   And here we have the problem with reviewing a great company like We Love Colors!  I get slightly drunk with all of the endless possibilities and end up spending way more time and money than I had ever intended on spending in the first place.  Damn you, We Love Colors!  Another obsession!  Another item that I definitely, most definitely will have to put into the NEED category.

Disclaimer:  I was provided product for an honest review!
